Impressive Performances at Autumn Concert
Wednesday, 11 November 2015
The Boys’ Division Great Hall was packed for this year’s Autumn Concert. A rousing performance from the Drum Corps, directed by Mr Forgrieve, made for a dramatic opening to the evening. This was followed by two quite contrasting pieces from the Joint Senior Concert Band. They played ‘By Loch and Mountain’ followed by music from The Incredibles, accomplishing both styles with great confidence.
The Tuned Percussion Ensemble then took centre stage and transported the audience to Brazil with ‘Tico Tico’ by Zequinha Abreu. The piece had been arranged for tuned percussion by Mr Forgrieve and was a lively, fast-paced number that showcased the students’ abilities. The Senior Guitar Group continued the Latin American atmosphere with a version of Madonna’s ‘La Isla Bonita’, which had been arranged by Mr Bleasdale.
Performances of ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’ and ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’ from the Brass Group changed the pace of the evening once again. As well as being highly entertaining, they provided the perfect transition to the Chamber Choir, who sang two pieces. The first was the traditional piece ‘Deep River’, and this was followed by ‘Pastime With Good Company’, which included pupils providing the drum, oboe and recorder accompaniment using their voices!
The Joint Jazz Band continued the evening’s entertainment with two very lively pieces: ‘Squib Cakes’ and ‘Mask of the Chilli Pepper’, which has become one of the band’s signature pieces, and helped to win them a Platinum Award at the National Concert Band North's Regional Festival this year. Both pieces featured impressive and confident solos from several musicians.
The finale was provided by the Massed Voices of Year 8, following the year group’s huge success at the Bridgewater Hall Gala Concert last year. They sang three pieces: ‘Viva La Vida’ by Coldplay, Adele’s Bond theme ‘Skyfall’, and ‘California Dreaming’ by The Mamas & The Papas. All three were sung with a huge amount of enthusiasm from the Year 8s, and the soloists in each of the pieces were very talented. The performance made for an excellent and uplifting finale to close the Autumn Concert.
