Lauren is Shining Example for Disability Snow Sports
Wednesday, 06 November 2013
Lauren Cooper, daughter of Bolton School Chemistry teacher, Steven Cooper, was presented with the Disabled Sports Achiever Award (sponsored by the University of Bolton) at the BoSPAA Sports Awards.
Lauren was born with a rare congenital disease, cycstic hygroma, and has had a gruelling schedule since birth of surgery and treatment at the Royal Manchester Children's hospital and Great Ormond Street, including tongue reconstruction. Despite this, eight year old Lauren has become a skilled alpine skier, competing in UK-wide skiing competitions.
Bolton School cricketers Nalisha Patel and Haseeb Hameed were also honoured at the BoSPAA Awards and Bolton School sponsored the category of ‘Coach of the Year’, which went to Lynda Grady of Bolton Trampoline Club. Lauren had a great night at the awards, and managed to chat to former Bolton School pupil Sir Philip Craven, who is busy organising the Winter Paralympic Games is Socchi Russia.
Seeing how skiing helped to rebuild Lauren’s strength and confidence, mum Sara decided to a develop a new disability ski programme along with Disability SnowSport UK and volunteers from Bolton School, who are working together to offer any resident of Bolton with a disability the opportunity to experience the thrill of skiing. She said: “Lauren has gained so much from skiing, both physically and mentally, that I wanted other children in the Bolton area to experience the same thing. With this in mind I have developed a project and secured funding. There are three, free taster sessions in November (held at the Chill Factore) and grant funded lessons starting in January. We have BASI qualified adaptive coaches, specialist equipment and trained volunteers to give support. With qualified instructors specialising in adaptive skiing and hi-tech adaptive equipment, snowsports become open to all.”
2013 taster sessions are:
Friday 15th Nov.5.30pm to 7.30pm
Friday 22nd Nov. 5.30pm to 7.30pm
Friday 30th Nov.5.30pm to 7.30pm
