School Archivists Gather at Bolton School
Monday, 22 June 2015
This year’s School Archivists’ Group Annual Conference was held at Bolton School and over 50 delegates enjoyed a day of lectures focussing on caring for your collections as well as networking opportunities. Mr Eric Fairweather, Bolton School’s Honorary Archivist, gave a presentation on Bolton School, its history and treasures and guests enjoyed a tour of the 32 acre campus. The School’s Chained Library with over 50 books, which dates from the 17th Century, proved one of many interesting talking points for the delegates which came from some of the UK’s most notable schools including Harrow, Westminster, Brighton College, Eton, Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Charterhouse and St Paul’s Girls’ School.
Mr Fairweather was delighted with how the day unfolded: “Bolton School was honoured to have the opportunity to host the National Conference of the Schools Archivists' Group (SAG) in our 500:100 Anniversary Year. It proved to be a resounding success and Rita Boswell, Chair of SAG, commented afterwards that the Arts Centre had been the best venue they had ever had for the Conference. She also thought that having one area sufficiently large enough to accommodate not only the lecture seating but also the displays by the exhibitors and the circular tables for refreshments and lunch had worked exceedingly well. Several delegates remarked to me that we were extremely fortunate to have had such a generous benefactor as Lord Leverhulme, others were amazed by the extent of our bursary programme and all were immensely impressed by the quality of our buildings. The lunch time tours led by Trevor Pledger and Carol Haslam led to so many questions that the afternoon session had to be delayed by fifteen minutes! Getting our guests away from the Chained Library was a particular challenge! The fact that both Headmaster Philip Britton and Headmistress Sue Hincks both took time out of their busy day to address the Conference made a huge impact - indeed Sue Hincks also attended the Sunday evening dinner at Luciano’s, attended by those delegates who travelled to Bolton the night before.”
The event was sponsored by SDS and Dataflair.
