U13s Boys are Lancashire Rugby Plate Winners

Bolton School U13s' rugby team has won a compelling Lancashire Plate Final, 24-20, against a very strong Merchant Taylors' side from Liverpool.

Bolton took an early lead through Rohan Patel who glided through the opposition from inside his own half. Merchants responded with a stunning try from their winger. With the Bolton forwards on top, Niall Hesson swept the ball and raced away for a great individual try. With Bolton leading 10-5 at half time the expected response from Merchants came early in the second half. A converted try followed by a penalty put Merchants 15-10 up with 12 minutes to go.

The response from Bolton was instant. From the kick off they forced an error and a surge from the outstanding Bolton forwards saw Ajay Kanji go over for a thoroughly deserved try. With Bolton dominating the play amongst the forwards another excellent passage of play resulted in a try from Patrick Hargreaves which was converted by captain David Price.

Merchants made the final 4 minutes a tense and exhilarating finale with a thoroughly deserved try. However, Bolton hung on for a deserved win and the celebration at the final whistle from the large crowd clearly showed what an outstanding game of rugby we had witnessed. Both schools showed dignity and sportsmanship throughout and players, staff and parents should all be commended.
