Twenty Year 5 children from 10 local primary schools enjoyed a competitive afternoon in Bolton School's new Riley Sixth Form Centre at a Spelling Bee competition. Supported by their parents and teachers, the girls and boys astounded the audience with their spelling ability. All the pupils taking part were already winners as they had won through earlier rounds held at their own school over the course of the academic year.
Miss Tomlinson, the event organiser, said: “The competition has been a great success and has really engaged pupils in the activity in terms of practising their spellings, improving their literacy and developing their memory skills. Each pupil was given 150 words to revise and then tested randomly on those words over the course of a minute. I was amazed at how well they kept their composure! I congratulate them and their teachers in preparing them so well!”
In a close fought contest, Lily Sargent of Wood Fold Primary School, Standish won the competition and took away with her a £20 book token. All the Year 5 children were given certificates of attendance.
