Year 8 Team In North-West Schools' Challenge Final
Friday, 02 March 2012
A team of four Year Eight boys has reached the final of the North-West junior 'School Challenge' quiz competition.
Two teams participated in the first heat of this year's event, both of whom won their initial group stage comfortably before going on to meet each other in what would prove to be a gripping semi-final contest. The team captained by Josh Campbell and comprising of Nathan Clark, Andy Lee and Thomas Underwood eventually emerged victorious, defeating an extremely capable quartet of Rohit Bagewadi, Caleb Hall-Paterson, Jarlath Skelly and Jack Virgin.
The Manchester Grammar School were their opponents in the final of this heat and, despite falling behind in the early stages, the team rallied to secure victory in what was the closest fixture at this stage of the competition in over a decade. The team will now progress to the North-West final in confident mood, knowing that they are only one step away from the national finals.
The tournament has been running annually since 1979 and is modelled on the television programme University Challenge with the finalists battling it out for the title in a London based showdown.
