Bolton School Will Rock You!
Thursday, 22 March 2012
The curtains went up and the roof was raised on opening night of one of the biggest and most ambitious stage shows ever undertaken at Bolton school - a stunning performance of the musical We Will Rock You.
The musical was a complete sell out immediately and over 800 paying guests will watch the production in the Girls' Division Theatre over five performances in four days.
We Will Rock You is a jukebox musical, based on the songs of Queen and named after their hit single of the same name. The musical was written by British comedian and author Ben Elton in collaboration with Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor. When the musical opened in the West End in 2002, it was instantly an audience favourite, and has since been played to packed houses all around the world. The story takes place in a tongue-in-cheek dystopian future where originality and individualism are shunned, and a lone "Dreamer" appears who can fulfill a prophecy that will enable the return of rock 'n roll.
Pupils from Year 10 to the final year of Sixth Form, along with many teachers, have been involved in the School's joint all singing production of the Queen musical. The cast members have been rehearsing for months and have been ably supported by other pupils involved in the creation of costumes, theatrical make up and stage sets. School musicians, directed by Mr Stephen Martin, recreated the sounds of Queen's greatest hits.
Director of the show, Miss Amy Liptrott, could not praise the students highly enough: "The 'jukebox' musical has been great fun for all involved. The cast started rehearsing in October and had weekly singing, dancing and drama rehearsals, and showed, from the start, that we had a very talented cast. The band started putting themselves through the paces of Queen's music and costume fittings and sound checks followed. Backstage crew started to assemble in February with stage design and painting bringing the picture to life. In total, we had over 80 students involved, including a large and very skilled Make-up team. The show was a sell-out and an extra performance was added so we turned away as few as possible. It has been a wonderful experience for all involved - one which I won't forget!"
