Café Scientifique Inspires Future Engineers

Pupils in all year groups were invited to gain an insight into the diverse career paths and options available in the broad field of engineering at the last Café Scientifique event of the year. The talk was from Eddie Walker, a mechanical engineer with over 30 years of experience in fire safety. He is now a Senior Consultant with INCENDIE, a leading Passive Fire Protection consultancy company.
Eddie told pupils about his background offered an overview of engineering today, mentioning the many different types of engineering jobs available which can allow everyone to follow a personal interest. Looking at the construction of an oil rig, he described the many different kinds of engineer whose work goes into the planning and construction. He went on to point out that engineering opens up opportunities not only to solve real-world problems and influence regulations, but also to move into management and even become a company’s CEO. The talk was peppered with examples of female role models within the engineering field.
Throughout the year, the Girls’ Division hosts lunchtime Café Culturel and Café Scientifique talks on a wide range of Arts and Sciences topics. These complement after-school Arts and Sciences Enrichment Lectures which are open to the public as well as Bolton School pupils and staff.
