Visiting Bolton School Girls’ Division as part of a series of enrichment lectures open to the general public, Isobel Garner offered up a fascinating lecture entitled ‘Engineering, the Building Blocks of Life’.
Having studied Civil Engineering, Isobel went on to become a Chartered Civil Engineer. During her career, she moved into Local Government and ultimately took up a post as a Chief Executive with over 6,000 staff and a budget of a third of a billion pounds. She explained that now she has a portfolio career working at Board level in organisations such as the Health and Safety Executive and the Wales Audit Office as well as working closely, in Whitehall, with the Secretary of State for Wales.
She told the audience of pupils, parents, teachers and the general public that she enjoys encouraging those around her to be bold and to grasp life with both hands and also provides career mentoring. In an upbeat and enthusiastic talk, she emphasised the need to grasp opportunities and to take risks; she also spoke about coping with insecurities and through relating anecdotes from her career and personal journey, both serious and humorous, how to deal with the building blocks of life.
This was the second in this year's calendar of Arts and Science Enrichment Lectures held in the Girls' Division, open to the Bolton School community and the general public. Please re-visit the Girls' Division homepage for details of future events.
