Extra Maths Lessons Add Up for Farnworth Schoolchildren

Gifted and Talented children at a cluster of Farnworth primary schools have enjoyed and prospered from extra Maths lessons from two Bolton School teachers, Phil Howard of the Boys’ Division and Lauren Reynolds of the Girls’ Division.

The aim of the project which has run over the past academic year has been to offer specialist extra teaching through a “Maths Club” to the children from Ferns Academy, Highfield School, St John’s CE, Queensbridge, St James’ CE, Our Lady of Lourdes, All Saints’ CE and St Peter’s CE where the extra classes were held.  The sessions, which ran during and after school, were aimed at boosting the young mathematicians’ chances of scoring highly in the end of Year 6 SATS exams.  The hard work has been rewarded with 13 out of the 23 children achieving a Level 6 - this level is equal to that reached, on average, in Years 8 and 9 in secondary school – and the vast majority of pupils scored exceptionally well on the level 3-5 paper – getting marks in the high 90s.

Headteacher Lynn Williams of St Peter’s CE said: “We are delighted with the outcomes and the standards achieved by the pupils. Achieving level 6 is a very challenging target for a Year 6 pupil, and means they are able to go on to secondary school, with an exceptionally strong grasp of mathematical concepts. On behalf of all the children that took part, from across the schools in Farnworth I would like to take the opportunity to thank Miss Reynolds and Mr Howard for their commitment to taking time out of their own school timetable each week  and and coming across to Farnworth to work with our gifted and talented pupils. This is a first class example of how independent and private schools can work with state schools for the benefit of the local community. We hope to continue the project in the next academic year.”

Miss Reynolds of Bolton School Girls' Division said: "I would like to say that it was a joy to work with children from Farnworth. They are bright, enthusiastic and able young mathematicians. I am pleased that we have been able to challenge them with some higher level content and I am proud of the children for achieving the level 6 and high level 5 scores. I hope they continue to enjoy their Maths as they start Secondary School."
