"The classic Bolton School combination is hard work, good friends, challenging and thought-provoking teaching, a healthy desire to puncture the self-important and the sense that you can work hard to achieve things in life. "

Girls Develop Public Speaking Skills

Tuesday, 30 June 2015

Year 8 girls in Bolton School Girls’ Division have been busy developing their public speaking skills and confidence through taking part in the English Speaking Board examinations.

Pupils – and staff – have worked hard on this new venture and have undertaken intensive preparation on a 4 minute talk, reciting a memorised poem and delivering a reading from a prepared section of their chosen book. In the exam itself, girls are also credited for their listening skills and ability to respond with intelligent questions and answers.

During their first year in the Senior School, the girls benefited from a ‘Discover Your Voice’ day run by the English Speaking Union. The programme of workshops throughout the day aimed to introduce the various different elements of debate: generating arguments, putting together evidence, listening and responding, and expressive delivery.
