A three girl team from Bolton School Girls' Division has made it through to the District Final of the Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition.

Maryam Ali from Y8 and Alina Ahmed and Poppy-Grace Stebbings from Y7 took part in the District heats of the Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition held at Falinge Park High School, Rochdale. The team was up against stiff competition from 7 other schools in the Intermediate Category, many of whom had entered in previous years.

Teacher Mrs Natalie James, who accompanied the team, said: “The girls watched nervously as the other teams took it in turns to present their debates and listened to the tough questions from the panel. When it was their time to present their chosen topic, ‘is beauty skin deep?’ Alina, the chairperson, introduced the group with confidence and then it was over to Maryam, the speaker, to deliver her arguments in a 6 minute presentation. The judges, and audience, were amazed at how maturely she answered the rather difficult questions posed by the panel. Poppy then gave a wonderful, heartfelt vote of thanks. After what seemed like hours, the judges finally made their decision and the team was over the moon to be crowned overall winners from the Intermediate U14 Category. They will go on to the District Final on Sunday 3rd March in Frodsham. We wish them every success in the next round of the competition.”

Rochdale's Mayor Councillor Mohammed Zaman presented certificates to all the students and said he had greatly enjoyed the event. Rotarian Warren Heyes from the Rotary District 1285 said: "The skills and confidence shown at such a young age were simply amazing."

After the District Final at Frodsham, the regional final will be held in Wrexham and the national final will be held in Nottingham in May of this year.
