Harriet Dickins, Captain of England and the Bolton School Girls’ Division water polo teams, enjoyed an outstanding international water polo tournament in Brno in the Czech Republic over the weekend of 29 April – 1 May.
The Year 11 pupil was taking part in the EU Nations’ Junior Women Water Polo Tournament along with Year 9 pupil Lucy Blenkinship. In scoring 31 goals for England, Harriet was easily the tournament’s top scorer, seven ahead of the next highest scorer from the Czech Republic who netted 24.
Looking back over the weekend, Harriet’s mother, Victoria, said: ‘Harriet was consistent in all matches and I was really proud to see her flexibility, strength and fitness throughout the competition. She played a number of different positions and was a great Captain for the England team. Her training at school and club level has definitely helped her develop these attributes.
‘It’s great to see Harriet enjoying representing her country. Harriet was introduced to water polo as a pupil at Bolton School and the support from school has been instrumental in her development and success to date.’
The competition saw six teams - England, Great Britain, Ireland, Lithuania, South Africa and hosts Czech Republic play a series of round-robin matches to determine the winner.
Harriet’s dedication to the sport was recently commended by her water polo coaches as she headed off for study leave: ‘A huge thank you to Harriet and (her twin brother) Josh Dickens who coached their final Y8 girls session this morning. Fantastic commitment to be on poolside every Friday morning at 07:30; their expert assistance really improved the quality of the sessions.’
