As one of the County’s top U19 female cricketers, year 10 Girls’ Division pupil Nalisha Patel had the exciting opportunity of being part of a tour to Dubai in February.
14 players were selected for the trip which consisted of eight days in Dubai, playing against a variety of Counties from England. The girls played four matches during the tour and finished 5th overall out of the eight teams on the tour. It was a very competitive tournament giving the players the best preparation for their season ahead. Tours away from home present the girls with challenges they wouldn’t normally come across playing in England including coping with weather conditions and being immersed in a team atmosphere – it also took the girls a while to get used to the pink balls used in Dubai!
Women and Girls Development Officer Jen Laycock commented: “It is an excellent opportunity for the girls to play competitive cricket outside the season in excellent surroundings. It allowed the girls to see where they are up to in development stages before the season starts.”
To raise funds for the trip, Nalisha and her teammates organised car washes at Old Trafford on certain match days, bag packs, football cards and many more activities. They were sponsored on the tour by top class helmet manufacturer Masuri, who supplied each player with a red rose embroidered helmet. As well as fundraising in preparation for the tour, the girls also undertook extensive fitness testing to ensure they were able to cope with the demands of playing in Dubai. The tour party was the Emerging Players U19 Girls team who consist of players from age 14 through to 19. Many of the girls including Nalisha are part of the 1st X1 training squad at present. Nalisha is also part of the England Women's Development Squad at Under 19 level and plays for Horwich and Bolton Ladies.
