Old Girl Launches Family Law Book
Thursday, 06 March 2014
Sarah Thompson, who left Bolton School in 1989 and is now Principal Lawyer with Slater & Gordon (UK) LLP, is the main contributor to a new book, “Family Law Made Simple”, which has been written by the Family Law team at Slater & Gordon. The book, written in plain language, offers a clear guide to understanding the law surrounding marriage, divorce, children and separation.
Promoting the book, Sarah said: “The aim is to offer transparent advice on how to work your way through the legal maze of family law – and how to deal with solicitors.”
Reflecting on her time at Bolton School, Sarah said: “Bolton School is certainly one of the reasons that I am in Law today. I joined the Debating Society which I enjoyed enormously and it certainly helped hone my negotiating skills. I recall that we were given good Careers advice and that my English Teacher, Mrs Todd, said that I was ‘tailor-made for Law” - I’ve never looked back!”
Considering Law as a Career option for pupils she said: “I certainly love my life as a Lawyer, it is interesting and challenging and offers a nice mix of court work, time with clients and office work including drafting documents. I think it is a good profession to be in. Over the 15 years that I have been in Law, roles have become much more specialised. I had initially intended to work in Commercial Law but, after covering a colleague who worked in Family Law I found my niche. Now I really enjoy it and I find it rewarding to help people sort out their lives. You can choose which branch of Law you want to go into at a relatively late point in your training. Many politicians have a Law background so there are a number of options once you are fully trained."
The book launch will take place on Tuesday 11 March from 6.00pm-8.30pm at the Milton Club on Deansgate in Manchester. It will retail on Amazon and in bookstores. Slater & Gordon is one of the UK’s largest law firms.
