Bolton School was, once again, delighted to sponsor the Young Business of the Year category at the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Business Awards.
A glitzy black tie dinner at the Midland Hotel, hosted by news reader Nicholas Owen, celebrated the strength and depth of the Greater Manchester business community.
MEN Media Associate Editor, Adam Jupp, said: "What is great about these awards is that they recognise the achievements of businesses of all shapes and sizes and at all stages of their growth journeys. The region’s best businesses are of huge importance to us all, in terms of creating jobs, economic output and creating a general sense of optimism and well-being.”
With dozens of entries, making it as a shortlisted finalist represented a great achievement in itself and the three Young Business of the Year finalists were: Hello Soda, DMR Training and Consultancy and ZEAL Creative. The award, the first on the night, was delivered by John Newbould, the School’s Head of Marketing, who announced the winner as being ZEAL Creative who are based at MediaCityUK. A delighted Robert White, Planning Director, who jointly picked up the award for ZEAL said: “I didn’t let on before the awards but I am actually an Old Boy of the School! Mr Caspar Joseph was my inspiration when I was there along with Mr Martin Wadsworth and Mr Roger Whitten!”
Ahead of the event, Headmaster of the Boys’ Division Mr Philip Britton, said: “We are delighted to once again sponsor the Young Business of the Year Award at the MEN Awards and look forward to celebrating individuals and companies that have made such a positive contribution to the regional economy. The attributes required to win reflect our own mission of sending out young people into the world who have drive, self-belief and talent. Boys and girls leave Bolton School as rounded individuals, capable of facing new challenges and with a love of learning – attributes that all young businesses also need. As we currently enjoy our centenary and quincentenary celebrations, tonight we look to celebrate the achievements of new businesses as they begin writing their own histories.”
Over 350 guests from the Greater Manchester business community were in attendance, including staff from Bolton School, Patterdale Hall (the School's adventure learning centre) and BSS Leisure.
Nick Hewer of The Apprentice and Countdown fame delivered the keynote address, regaling the audience with tales of Amstrad; the inception of Sky and how the first satellite dishes were almost made by a bin lid producer; and The Apprentice, conceding that not all candidates are chosen for their business acumen!
Other winners on the night were: the Manchester Airport Group who won the Mitchell Henry Prize, a new honour named after the founder of the MEN and which recognises a business that has made a contribution to life and work in the north-west for a significant period of time. Judges said: “Manchester Airports Group is absolutely integral to the functioning of the whole region as an economic area and is the beating heart of the wider Northern Powerhouse”; restaurant and bar chain Living Ventures were awarded the Judges’ Prize; On the Beach, a travel firm, scooped the prize for best company with a turnover of over £100m; Missguided, a fashion company, won the award for businesses in the category £50m-£100m; data-centre specialists Sudlows were winners in the £25m-£50m category; aviation training software firm EDM Ltd won the £10m-£25m category; Avecto, a technology company, won the £5m-£10m sector; and metal-powder specialist firm LPW Technology won the under £5m prize.
