Sir Philip Craven Launches Sports Facilities Bid

Sir Philip Craven, President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and Old Boy of Bolton School, has launched the School’s aspirational bid to develop its sports facilities in partnership with the local community and national sport governing bodies.

The ambitious project has five phases, aiming to provide national standard hockey and lacrosse facilities, a Centre of Excellence for cricket and netball based on both outdoor surfaces and a Sports Hall and pitches. The development would build upon facilities already in place on the School’s main campus and its Leverhulme Pavilion site on Chorley New Road.

In Sir Philip’s address he emphasised how the Olympic legacy is really happening across the UK and how he is proud to put his name to this project. He told the audience: “London 2012 saw the coming together of many agencies and I see this project as doing much the same.  There is the potential here for amazing developments through partnership.  I am also honoured to be invited to be President of the Old Boltonians’ Association during the period of the School’s 100/500 year celebrations.  I am right with it. Let’s get to it!”

The event took place in the Leverhulme Suite of the new Riley Sixth Form Centre at the School and was attended by over 60 local councillors, politicians and sports and leisure managers from the town.  Phase 1 of the project involves the construction of an all-weather lacrosse and hockey pitch at the Leverhulme Pavilion and a Declaration of Interest has already been submitted to England Hockey, which is part of Sport England.

Sue Hincks, Head of the Girls’ Division welcomed the audience and the Boys’ Division Headmaster, Philip Britton, gave a detailed presentation to guests who included Councillor Cliff Morris, Leader of the Council, as well as Councillors Chris Peacock, Anthony Connell (Sport) and Kevin McKeon (Education). Also in attendance was David Singleton, Chair of the Bolton Community Leisure Trust and representatives of Bolton University, Bolton Lads and Girls’ Club, Bolton Arena, Bolton Wanderers Community Trust, Bolton Metro Swim, Bolton Hockey, English Lacrosse and England Squash and Racketball.
