KPMG Internships Launched for the Fourth Year Running

Friday, 07 February 2014

In the summer of 2014, KPMG will once again be offering two talented Sixth Form students from Bolton School the chance to undertake an intensive four-week internship. This is the fourth year that KPMG has offered Bolton School students this unique work placement opportunity.

Old Girl Katie Clinton has been at the forefront of the KPMG Internship programme since its inception. After leaving Bolton School in 1997, she went on to study at UMIST before obtaining her Chartered Accountant status with ACA; she has been a Director at KPMG for 14 years.

Katie returned to Bolton School along with her colleague Graham Carney, who is a Corporate Finance Associate with the company, to launch this year’s application process.

This year’s crop of interested Sixth Formers filled the Sutcliffe Suite in the Girls’ Division, and the students listened carefully as Katie talked about what KPMG could offer them. Even the application process gives the Sixth Formers a valuable insight into the world of job applications and what will be required. In terms of work experience, the KPMG Internship has the potential to provide a differentiating factor on the successful applicants’ CVs, and will help with applications to university or future jobs.

The internship opportunity which KPGM offers to Bolton School’s pupils is unusual in that it is paid, and the selection process has been designed to simulate a real life job application. The sixth formers will be treated exactly the same as school leavers and graduates who apply for full-time work at KPMG. They must fill in an application form and then, if selected, will go through an assessment day in Manchester. This consists of a written exercise and interview, as well as meeting and getting to know the team.

Once part of the KPMG team, the two selected Sixth Formers will effectively become part of the Financial Services Audit and Corporate Finance teams, and will spend two weeks working in each. They will experience two functions within the team over the course of the placement, as well as taking part in corporate away days and become involved with the company’s charity programmes if these are happening during the internship period. This is a great chance for the Sixth Formers to work as part of a challenging and exciting company, and experience a workplace environment first-hand with all the responsibility that comes with it.
