The KPMG summer internship programme will once again offer two Bolton School Sixth Form pupils the opportunity to spend four weeks working at the Manchester office this summer. Old Boy Matt Fray returned to School with his colleague Hannah Maughan to talk to pupils in Year 12 about this wonderful opportunity.
KPMG’s flagship work placement scheme is exclusive to Bolton School and has been running for the past six years, led by Old Girl Katie Clinton. Katie left the Girls’ Division in 1997 and went on to obtain a Business Management degree from UMIST and her Chartered Accountant qualification with ICAEW. She joined KPMG in 2000 and is now a Partner and the firm’s UK Head of Internal Audit. She set up the paid internship scheme in order to give Sixth Formers a valuable insight into the job application and interview process, and to give the two successful applicants genuine work experience as part of the Financial Services Audit and Corporate Finance teams. Pupils spend two weeks with each team and experience two functions over the course of the placement.
Matt, who left Bolton School in 2006 to study at Durham University and is now a Corporate Tax Manager, and Hannah, an Assistant Manager in Transaction Services, gave the Sixth Formers an insight into what KPMG does as one of the ‘Big Four’ Professional Services firms in the UK.
They also talked about the rigorous application process: Bolton School pupils looking to access the internship have to complete the same application form, written test and interview as school leavers and graduates looking to apply for a real job with KPMG. Matt and Hannah also discussed what the internship with KPMG would involve, including the functions of the Financial Services Audit and Corporate Finance departments and the kinds of tasks successful applicants might be involved with during their time with KPMG.
Interested Sixth Form pupils also heard from last year’s KPMG summer interns, Kate Ball and Abigail Harrison. Both students found the experience a very rewarding challenge, and were able to talk about the skills they developed and the insight they gained as a result.
The KPMG summer internships are a great opportunity for Bolton School students to gain first-hand experience of the corporate workplace environment and the responsibility that comes with it. Involvement with the scheme also has the potential to provide a differentiating factor on CVs to assist with applications to university and future jobs.
