Student's Debut for Salford City Reds
Friday, 18 March 2011
Alex Davidson, aged 18 and a Year 13 student at Bolton School, will make his debut for rugby league giants, Salford City Reds, in tonight's Engage Super League clash against Hull KR. Alex, who is likely to be on the bench to start with, is fully expected to make his debut as prop; he will find himself up against Hull's recent signing and rugby league legend Willie Mason.
Pre-match Alex commented: "I am extremely excited about tonight's game. This is the biggest opportunity of my career so far. I am a bit nervous but have been going through my usual preparation routines and have been focussing on what I need to do on the night."
Mr Paul Fernside, Head of Rugby at Bolton School, said: "All Alex`s rugby coaches at school are delighted for him. It is a reward for all the hard work he has put in during his seven years at school and with his rugby clubs outside school. We hope he takes this opportunity to prove himself against some of the best players in the world." Head of Sixth Form and First XV rugby coach, Mr Caspar Joseph, added: "This is an outstanding achievement. I am delighted for Alex, he is an all round good student, an intelligent lad, a prefect and, of course, an excellent sportsman!"
Alex, who hails from Westhoughton, has been on Salford's books for three years and has also played for the England U16s rugby league team. He has also been a Bolton School first team rugby union regular and played for the North of England Independent Schools' Barbarians. If he plays well tonight, he could be in Salford's squad for the next match which is in France against the Catalans Dragons.
**Post-script - Alex played in the game and helped the Reds to one of their best wins in years as they overcame Hull KR by 34-18.**
