Young Analyst Chemistry Competition Tests Year 12s
Wednesday, 02 July 2014
Bolton School has held the first ‘inter-division’ Year 12 Young Analyst Chemistry Competition.
Twenty-seven teams of two entered the competition, including two mixed teams!
Students were faced with a two-hour undergraduate level task in which they had to determine the composition of a mixture of an acid and a salt: ethanedioic acid and potassium ethanedioate. They had to perform two titrations in a team environment. The first was an acid-alkali and the second an unfamiliar redox titration.
After the practical component they used their results in a series of gruelling calculations!
First place went to Shyam Dhokia and Alexander Lawrence. Muhammad Karin and Surya Prasad came second, with Jack Flood and Harry Myers taking third place.
