A Level Science Taster for Students
Thursday, 24 November 2011
Year 11 pupils from across the borough have spent the last three Saturday mornings attending A Level Taster Sessions at Bolton School.
The sessions, funded by the Ogden Trust Partnership, have focussed on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and have given the pupils experience of typical A Level lessons, ranging from organic chemistry to particle physics. Pupils from Ladybridge, St James's, Turton, Canon Slade and Westhoughton have joined up with students from Bolton School Girls' Division and Boys' Division to sample these Saturday morning sessions.
Miss Sarah Gorner, who has organised the sessions, said: "The idea is to stimulate a passion in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics amongst the GCSE students and to hopefully encourage them to go on to study these subjects both at A Level and beyond. It has been immensely rewarding to see the pupils engaged in these subjects outside of normal school time and has given the pupils an opportunity to ask for advice about their A Level choices and learn more about what Post-16 study will be like."
The scheme is run in partnership by Bolton School and The Ogden Trust. The two organisations also offer bursaries in Physics and Chemistry for talented students who wish to join Bolton School in Year 12 to study some of the sciences amongst their 'A' level courses.
