Girls 3rd in North West Regional Biology Quiz

  • GD 3rd in NW Regional Biology Quiz 2018

A team of Girls’ Division Year 12 students achieved third place in the North West Regional Biology Quiz. Amelia Bolton, Nicola Li, Subhi Loganathan and Fatimaa Naeem visited UCLAN to take part. The following report of the day was written by Nicola:

“The whole day was a treat! Well done to our team, and thank you so much for the awesome teamwork!

“During the day we were based in the School of Pharmacy and we had the opportunity to learn so many new things, such as how to read the base sequence of a plasmid and figure out the number and length of the individual fragments that remained after being cut by enzymes, as well as how to use a variety of sources from the presented scene and controlled experiments to find out what brought on an outbreak of food poisoning at an event.

“Personally I really enjoyed the recognition of earthworm species in sterile soil, seeing fresh water invertebrates under a very high resolution microscope and working efficiently as a team to answer quick fire questions on random species’ evolution. Although we were strictly timed (which may have caused us to panic and rush quite a bit!) nevertheless the day was fully packed with enjoyable, exciting activities that would push your brain to the limit!”
