Girls Go Gold Conference at Bolton School

Friday, 04 July 2014

Bolton School is delighted to host this year’s North of England Girls’ School Association (GSA) Girls Go Gold Conference on Thursday 18 September.

In what promises to be a motivating and thought-provoking day, there will be two nationally renowned keynote speakers: rower Helen Glover MBE, who is the reigning World and Olympic champion in the women’s coxless pairs and Jenny Meadows, the current European Indoor Champion at 800m and third fastest British woman over this distance; Jenny will be joined by her coach and husband, Trevor Painter, who will also present a session.

The overarching theme for the day will be “Where Sport Can Take You” and a variety of speakers and workshops will illustrate the many career paths in sport.  In addition, a variety of Higher Education institutions will be present to enable girls to consider the opportunities for study which lie ahead.

Tracey Neville, the former England netball player, who competed in two Commonwealth Games, will run a netball workshop; Victoria Cotton, BBC Sport Producer, will talk about TV sports production and Sonia Oxley of Reuters will present on sports journalism; there will be four practical sessions run by University staff on sports and biomechanics testing, sports intervention, sports rehab and physiotherapy and there will be a seminar on podiatry led by Dr Lindsay Hill.  A large number of Sports Departments from Universities will be in attendance, including Loughborough, Liverpool John Moores, Chester, Bolton, UCLAN, Liverpool Hope and Edge Hill.  Courtesy of Sporting Chance USA, girls will also have the opportunity to learn about overseas sports placements as an alternative pathway to develop both academic and sports scholarship opportunities in the USA.

The day is designed to inspire the girls attending to believe anything is possible with the right mental attitude and lots of hard work to develop their talent.

Girls from independent schools from across the country will attend the event.
