Write Where Stories Live

There are places that invite creativity. Patterdale Hall is one of them. Set amongst mountains, woodland, lakes and open skies, Patterdale Hall offers an extraordinary setting for creative exploration, reflection and discovery. Whether through poetry, prose, scriptwriting, spoken word, theatre, journalling, nature writing or cross-arts practice, our retreats create space for people to slow down, notice more deeply and reconnect with their own creative voice.

Surrounded by some of the most celebrated literary landscapes in Britain, participants write within sight of places that inspired generations of writers and artists.

Today, that legacy continues through contemporary creative practice that invites participants not simply to learn about place, but to create within it.

Creative Writing Retreats for Schools

Patterdale Hall offers bespoke creative writing retreats for schools, colleges and youth groups.

Working closely with teachers, we design programmes tailored to the age, interests and developmental stage of each group. Retreats can support curriculum objectives, literacy development, creative health and wellbeing, enrichment activity or simply provide young people with an unforgettable opportunity to explore creativity in a place of outstanding natural beauty.

Our programmes draw upon writers working across a range of genres and forms, including poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, scriptwriting, writing for performance, spoken word and storytelling. We work with award-winning published authors from the Lake District, the North West and across the UK to create experiences that are ambitious, relevant and inspiring.

Writing activities are often combined with exploration of the landscape itself. Young people might write beside streams, sketch ideas on mountain walks, gather observations in woodland settings, respond to literary heritage sites or use the natural environment as a springboard for imagination and reflection.

Every programme is different. Some focus on communication, confidence and voice. Others support curriculum learning, literary study or examination preparation. Many are designed simply to cultivate curiosity, creativity and a lifelong relationship with reading and writing.

Above all, we aim to create experiences that are inventive, transformational and inspiring, creating moments of discovery and creativity that can stay with young people for a lifetime.

Beyond Writing: Multi-Arts Creative Retreats

For schools and groups wishing to broaden the scope of their visit, creative writing can sit alongside a wider programme of arts activity.

Whether developing a piece of writing, creating a sketchbook, recording sounds from the landscape or producing collaborative artwork, participants are encouraged to explore creativity as a way of understanding themselves, one another and the world around them.

Working with artists, educators and cultural practitioners, we can create multi-arts experiences that combine writing with visual arts, drawing in nature, creative wellbeing practices, theatre-making, storytelling, photography, filmmaking, sound recording, mapping, reflection and collaborative creative projects.

The Lake District has long inspired artists working across disciplines. Our multi-arts retreats encourage participants to engage with the landscape through observation, imagination and making, creating opportunities for deeper reflection, creative confidence and personal growth.

Meet Naomi Lord, Director of Creative Writing, Patterdale Hall

Naomi Lord is an artist, educator and cultural producer with more than twenty years of experience working across education, arts and community settings.

A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and a Specialist Leader in Cultural Education, her approach combines literary practice, creativity, wellbeing and place-based learning.

Naomi is also the Foundation Director of Creative Learning and Partnerships at Bolton School and develops creative learning programmes that connect young people, communities and culture. Her practice spans theatre, film, visual arts, creative writing and participatory design, creating opportunities where creativity supports wellbeing, belonging, confidence and cultural participation.

At the heart of her work is a belief that everyone has stories to discover, shape and share, and that creativity can help people better understand themselves, their communities and the places they inhabit. Her work focuses on helping young people develop stronger voices, greater agency and meaningful opportunities for creative expression.
