This year, the Junior Girls’ Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Day coincided with the 2026 Winter Olympics, and in honour of the host country was themed around all things Italian. Throughout the day, girls enjoyed a carousel of activities designed to immerse them in the culture and language of Italy.
In the Library, girls learned some Italian conversation with Primary Division MFL specialist Signora Eccleshare. They also focussed on snow sport language, and played Snow Charades, acting out wintry scenes, some featuring Winter Olympics events, while the others in their group guessed the correct answer in Italian. The day took further inspiration from the Winter Olympics with Curling in the hall and building Marble Runs inspired by the Skeleton, Luge and Bobsleigh events in the Art room. There was also a Virtual Sports Corner, where girls used VR headsets to try out skiing and snowboarding and visit the Dolomites so they could send a virtual postcard home. Outside at break and lunch time, they enjoyed a ‘Winter Olympic Arena’: using their imaginations to take part in ice skating and ski events.
The girls were also whisked away to ‘Caffè Alpino’ and a Pizzeria where they engaged their creative abilities to design their own pizzeria boxes and build pizzas using salt dough. They also roleplayed as staff and customers at an Italian caffè and gelateria, again practicing their language skills to place and serve orders and enjoy a refreshing limonata. Even lunch was themed to match the day, with delicious Italian food on the menu!
The Junior Girls’ MFL Day is an annual event designed to encourage the girls to learn more about other languages and cultures.
