Year 6 pupil Nusaybah had the remarkable honour of attending the BBC 500 Words Final at Windsor Castle after being selected as one of the top 50 finalists. 500 Words is the BBC’s largest and most prestigious writing competition for children, with 46,000 entries nationwide this year, and reaching the final stage is an outstanding achievement.
Nusaybah’s story, Night of Numbers, is a powerful and imaginative piece about a young boy who struggles to fall asleep because of his autism. As numbers swirl through his mind at night, the story thoughtfully explores sensory overload and racing thoughts, while also highlighting the creativity, resilience and unique strengths that come with thinking differently. Through warmth, emotional depth and originality, Nusaybah beautifully weaves together courage, self-belief and the power of imagination: qualities that clearly resonated with the judges and secured her place among the national finalists.
The ceremony was presented by The One Show stars Alex Jones and Roman Kemp and the day itself was truly unforgettable. Many well-known guests were in attendance, including the Queen, Lenny Henry and author Francesca Simon. The children enjoyed a creative performance reimagining how stories by A. A. Milne and Enid Blyton were once read to Queen Elizabeth II as a baby, along with a surprise appearance from Paddington Bear, which added even more delight to the occasion!
Nusaybah had the very special opportunity to meet the Queen in person, shaking her hand and even receiving a cheeky wink, which made the moment even more memorable. She was presented with a finalist pin badge, certificate and commemorative stationery, enjoyed the opportunity to view the Queen’s private collection of original children’s books, both modern and classic, collected signed autographs and attended a celebratory high tea with the Queen and other invited guests.
The presentation ceremony was filmed for a special 500 Words programme, which was broadcast on The One Show on Friday 6 March, and on CBBC on Saturday 7 March.
