Year 9 pupil Rosalind has won the 11-14 category of a national biology competition organised by the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB). The science communication competition asked participants to produce an infographic on animal behaviour that she has observed, either in real life or virtually. She chose to make her infographic about the shell-swapping behaviour of hermit crabs, which she has learned about during holidays in Scotland.

The infographic took several evenings to design and she read published research to help her produce it. The ASAB praised her entry for its clarity and ability to communicate animal behaviour science in an engaging and accessible way. Judges were also impressed by the thought and care that went into her design, and her talent for sharing scientific ideas with wider audiences.

Her work has been added to the ASAB website and will be published in the journal Animal Behaviour in January 2026, as well as being shared on ASAB social media.

This is Rosalind’s second academic publication: she wrote a book review which appeared in Nature Reviews Chemistry when she was nine.
