Reading, appreciating and learning poetry off by heart forms part of the Reading Award Scheme in English at Hesketh House. Year 4 pupil Tullah Maher showed her true understanding of Jenny Joseph’s reflective and humorous poem ‘Warning’ when she chose to learn it. After she recited the poem to the class, Tullah received rapturous applause from her peers.

Her English teacher, Mrs Mary Worsley, was so impressed that she entered Tullah’s fine interpretation into the national poetry competition Poetry by Heart in the Age 7+ Showcase Section.

The judging panel were blown away by the video entry and Tullah received tremendous comments from them: ‘Congratulations on your magnificent entry … To achieve this in a national competition is something you can be very proud of. We really enjoyed this mature, confident and witty performance, well done.’

Tullah received a certificate and a message encouraging her to enter the competition again next year. We hope you enjoy her humorous recitation and maybe it’s time to don a red hat and some purple clothing!
