Holocaust Memorial Day holds a significant place in our school’s cultural calendar and provides an important moment for the Bolton School community to reflect and remember alongside our Jewish pupils and families.
As we have done for many years, yesterday pupils from Bolton School attended the Holocaust Memorial service held at Bolton Town Hall. Historically, that ceremony has always been a meaningful and powerful act of remembrance, focused on the historical realities and human cost of the Holocaust. Regrettably, on this occasion, colleagues and pupils were upset that one speaker broadened their remarks to include discussion of contemporary world events and interpretations of the Holocaust in a modern political context.
Whilst we recognise that there are a range of views on these matters, as a school we are very clear that the Holocaust Memorial Day event was not, and must never be, a forum for political debate or commentary on current conflicts. Its purpose is remembrance, education and respect for those who suffered and died, and for the communities still affected today.
We remain committed to supporting our pupils to engage with complex issues in a respectful way, and to ensuring that moments of remembrance are treated with the dignity and focus they deserve.
