Earlier this month, Bolton School’s Head of Foundation, Philip Britton MBE, was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester.
Philip was among a group of 12 new Deputy Lieutenants of Greater Manchester appointed by the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Diane Hawkins JP LLB in October 2025. In this role, he will support the Lord-Lieutenant in her duties as the King’s representative in Greater Manchester.
Speaking about his appointment, Mr Britton said:
“I am proud and pleased to be appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant for Greater Manchester. It will be a pleasure to serve the community in this way and to support the Lord Lieutenant in their work. I am also looking forward to working with the team of Deputy Lieutenants who serve our local area in Bolton.
“One of the areas of the role that is most interesting for me is to help local voluntary organisations to consider putting themselves forward for the Kings’ Award for Voluntary Service.
“Bolton School was proud to receive this award in 2017, and I well remember how helpful the Deputy Lieutenant was in helping us understand how notable all we did as a School was in preparation for that. The outside eye and sense of validation offered by the Deputy Lieutenant during that process can be so uplifting for volunteers, and I will enjoy offering that assistance to organisations in the coming years.”
Deputy Lieutenants are selected for their service to community, country or national life. Through the course of his career, Mr Britton has made significant contributions to both education, physics education and the wider community: he received an MBE in 2010 for services to physics and holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Greater Manchester, is a fellow of the Institute of Physics and the Chartered College of Teaching, and this year is Chair of the HMC, the professional organisation for heads of leading independent schools in the UK and internationally
